Women’s March 2018

This past weekend was the one-year anniversary of President Trump’s swearing in, also marking the anniversary of last January’s Women’s March and the female empowerment movement it sparked in 2017.

All across the United States and in many cities around the world, women took to the streets in solidarity to give voice and visibility to some of today’s most pressing issues. Last year, Pornhub Insights took a look at the 2017 Women’s March and found major traffic changes to the site, especially with female traffic in cities where the largest marches were organized.

Stormy Daniels Searches

AVN Hall of Fame pornstar Stormy Daniels (nsfw) has appeared in adult videos since the early 2000s, but recently shot to the forefront of public attention when her back-door dealings with U.S. President Trump were revealed.  Newsweek contacted us to see how the story may have affected searches on Pornhub.  Our analytics data revealed that Stormy’s story sent millions of curious visitors to Pornhub, where searches containing “Stormy Daniels” increased from a daily average of 2500 to more than 2 million searches in just 5 days.  Worldwide searches peaked at 375% above the 2 week average on January 14th.

Nothing sets Washington D.C. abuzz like a sex scandal, so it’s no surprise that Stormy Daniels searches increased more drastically in the capital than the rest of the United States.  Searches peaked at 332% above the 2 week average in D.C. on January 14, and 272% higher country-wide.

Hawaii on Alert

On Saturday January 13, residents all across Hawaii received a text message at 8:07am stating that a ballistic missile was on it’s way to their island and advised they should take shelter immediately. With international tensions currently at a high, it’s no surprise that the warning was taken very, very seriously. We can’t begin to imagine what would go through someone’s mind after reading that message, but based purely on the traffic numbers, it’s NOT to be watching porn (nsfw).

Based on real-time, per-minute pageviews, and compared to levels on the previous two Saturdays, our statisticians found a precipitous drop in traffic at 8:07am immediately after the warning was sent out. By 8:23am, traffic was a massive -77% below that of a typical Saturday. As residents were notified around 8:45 that the initial warning was sent in error, traffic began to return to normal and Hawaiians collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Those seeking further relief, headed back to Pornhub where pageviews surged +48% above typical levels at 9:01am.

Since the release of our 2017 Year In Review, we haven’t stopped looking into the results! Our friends over at Mashable asked us to take another look at some of the stats, but this time with the most popular searches by each state in the USA. They might all fly one flag, but the states aren’t always united in their taste for porn.
